Beginner's Knitting

This is a true beginners course. We will be teaching a simple method of casting on stitches, how to do a knit stitch (also called garter stitch), a purl stitch, and stocking stitch. You will also learn how to cast off, or end, your piece. Once the stitches are mastered we will be working on small projects that will be immediately useful in your kitchen! These projects will help you learn to read patterns: we will start with a pattern that pushes you to conquer knit and purl stitches, identifying where you go off pattern and how to self-correct. From there, participants will move on to a pattern that advances skill level by a step.

FAQs

What do I need to bring for the course?

You will need: Size US7 needles, either stick or circular. It is your preference, though Rachel works almost exclusively on circular. You will also need one or two balls of 100% cotton yarn. The brand Sugar ‘N Cream cotton yarns can be found at both Joann’s and Michael’s. Please bring solid colors only as pattern mistakes and corrections are easiest taught in a one color environment.

About the Instructor

Rachel Clarkin lives and works in Alpharetta, GA. Since moving to Georgia, Rachel has worked as an Executive Recruiter in the banking industry. In 2010 Rachel branched out on her own and is now an independent recruiter. Along with her partner, Mark Abrams, Rachel works with client banks across the United States. It pays the bills.

Rachel’s real loves are more on the creative side. Rachel is a docent at the Historic Oakland Cemetery in Atlanta where she works at the Visitors Center on Thursday afternoons. She is also a tour guide for Oakland and for the past eight years, Rachel has acted in their annual Halloween Tours, where she has portrayed such Oakland “residents” as Margaret Mitchell, author of Gone With The Wind, Sarah Grant Slaton, wife of Governor John Slaton who was governor in the early 1900s and Abbie Howard, an Atlanta Town Madam! Rumor has it Margaret Mitchell used Abbie as an inspiration for Belle Wattling, the town Madam in GWTW. Rachel LOVES to knit. Wherever she has time, she fills it with knitting and has a knit line of animals that she sells at craft fairs and online.
